<p>Just a month into the New Year, bad news seems to be flowing in for employees in investment banks. Multinational banks, especially the ones headquartered in Europe, will likely brace for more job cuts, impacting their operations in the UAE. However, the contagion may not spread to local entities, which are likely to see 2012 as a much better year.<span id="more-2195"></span></p>
<p>“I would expect to see job cuts from most of the multi-national players in the region as there is a definite trend to downsize for any bank, which is headquartered in Europe. <p>From my perspective as a CFO Search specialist, 2.5 years is a very long time. There were many reasons cited by the CEO as to the reason that it took that long, but in reality, they sound like excuses, not reasons.</p>
<p>Let’s put it this way. If a company is serious about hiring a CFO, then they will make hiring their CFO a priority. They will retain an experienced executive search firm, create appropriate assessment of the specifications needed for the role together with the search firm, and work to identify the potential candidates that could be appropriate for the role.</p>
<p>Why did it take so long?</p>
<p>Here are some (potential) reasons:</p>
<p><strong>They weren’t serious about hiring.</strong> To hire a CFO, you need to be serious. CFOs are smart people. CFOs know when a company that is going through the motions of looking for a Chief Financial Officer, but don’t mean it.</p>
<p><strong>They had a CFO.</strong> According to the article, the CFO spot was covered, even though the person covering it was happy to move on to an operational role now that he is relieved from his CFO duty.</p>
<p><strong>There was no pain.</strong> Illumina was growing rapidly, cash was coming in, and they didn’t need to raise financing. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.</p>

<p>Demand for risk professionals in UAE banks has gone up by double-digits this year, according to experts in the recruitment industry.</p>
<p>&#8220;There has been a 28-per cent increase in risk vacancies registered by Huxley Associates in 2011 compared with 2010,” Keon Jamshidi, Huxley Associate&#8217;s in-house risk expert told <strong><em>&#8216;Emirates24|7&#8242;.</em></strong></p>
<p>According to Barclay Simpson, a recruiter of risk professionals, risk management maintains high profile and the demand for risk professionals had gone down during the crisis of 2009 but is up again.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s no surprise that bank CEOs get paid most handsomely when it comes to the cross-industry salary sweepstakes, but there are a few others in the industry who get better deals.</p>
<p>While a bank CEO’s paycheck dwarfs everyone else’s, it may not necessarily be the most lucrative one in the industry. When other factors such as performance and longevity are taken into account, there are other jobs in a bank that look much more lucrative than the top post.</p>
